Layer by Layer: What Sits Inside a Corrugated Wall

A corrugated wall has three basic parts. Two flat liners face outward, and a wavy layer sits between them. This liner and fluting pairing works like rows of tiny arches. It spreads pressure across the panel instead of letting it land on one spot. Small gift and food cartons, such as custom muffin boxes, often use the thinner flutes. We make our boards with kraft or white liners. Before a job starts, we match the flute to what you’re packing. The flute you pick sets the thickness and feel of the box:

  • E flute: about 1.5mm thick, with a smooth face for sharp print
  • B flute: about 3mm thick, with good crush resistance and clean print

Single, Double or Triple? Pick the Build Your Product Actually Needs

Each extra layer adds strength. It also adds weight and cost. In the single vs double wall decision, product weight and stacking height should lead. Single wall handles light goods well, such as candle dust cover boxes. A Welsh wool mill was shipping blankets in double wall. Blankets are light, so it moved to single wall and spent less on boxes. Triple wall can stand in for a wooden crate on heavy loads. We run a box compression test on our board to check stacking strength. How many layers does a single wall box have?

It has one fluted layer between two flat liners. That makes three layers of paper in total.

What is the difference between double wall and triple wall?

Double wall has two fluted layers. Triple wall has three. The extra layer makes the board thicker and much stronger.

Is double wall always stronger than single wall?

Usually, yes. But the flute type and the liner grade matter too. A well chosen single wall can beat a poorly chosen double wall.

Which flute goes best in a double wall box?

B and C flute is a common pairing. It balances stacking strength with cushioning.

Can I print on every wall type?

Yes. Print goes on the outer liner. E flute gives the finest detail.

How thick is triple wallboard?

It is around 10mm and above, depending on the flute mix.
