Food-grade packaging is about the whole combination of board, coating, ink and use, not a single label. Is custom food packaging safe for direct food contact? Only if the material and any coating suit the food and the conditions, such as temperature and fat content. Sustainability terms are not interchangeable. What is the difference between recyclable, biodegradable and compostable packaging? Recyclable means it can enter standard recycling. Biodegradable means it breaks down over time, with no guaranteed timeframe. Compostable means it breaks down under defined composting conditions. Recycled content means the material has had a previous life. Ask which claim applies and how it is evidenced. Barrier coatings involve a trade-off. A coating that resists grease or moisture can make a pack harder to recycle, so ask what the coating is made from and whether the whole pack can be recycled together. Dry products such as snacks and chips need a pack that keeps them crisp and stacks cleanly. Hot food needs board that does not soften or trap steam.
