Wrapped Board or Scored Board: Two Genuinely Different Ways to Build a Rigid Box

Most buyers assume all rigid boxes are made the same way. They aren’t, and knowing the difference changes both cost and sustainability profile. Paper-over-board is the traditional method. Greyboard is die-cut, folded into shape, and then wrapped in a separate printed or textured paper. It’s the most common construction and offers the widest range of paper finishes: uncoated papers for texture, coated papers (gloss, silk, matt) for durability and clarity, recycled papers, specialist metallics and textures, and bespoke colour-matched stock.

Scored-board construction works differently. Rather than wrapping a separate paper layer, the print and finish are applied directly to the board and precisely scored to form clean folds, skipping the wrapping stage entirely. This uses less material, improves recyclability since there’s nothing to separate before recycling, and suits brands prioritising sustainability without sacrificing a sharp, structured look. On board types, chipboard and greyboard are the standard cores. SBS (Solid Bleached Sulfate) board, available coated one side (C1S) or two (C2S), gives a cleaner print surface for lighter premium applications. Natural kraft suits an organic, minimal aesthetic. Duplexed or laminated boards add extra rigidity for demanding structural applications.
