How a Laser Cut Light Box Gets Its Glow, and Which Lighting Style Fits Your Gift or Display

A laser-cut wood light box feels solid. It’s the one people keep on a shelf for years. Card is lighter and costs less, so it works well for gift sets.
Most of our wood boxes are cut from 3mm or 4mm plywood. It’s strong, and the grain takes varnish and stain well. Alder is another option. It’s a light hardwood, and you can see the cut edges clearly. With any of our woods, we can varnish or paint the edges to protect them. Card is the better pick for lamps and gift sets. It sits comfortably beside cosmetic rigid boxes too.
What Laser Cut Light Boxes Template Holds Before Any Wood or Card Is Cut
A template is the file the laser reads. It has every wall, the base, the lid, and the pattern drawn out. Most templates are saved as SVG, DXF, or PDF files. They’re drawn for 3mm or 4mm material.
Joints on the walls and base are drawn to match the material thickness, so everything fits snugly. You’ll find the cutout pattern, which is the shapes, letters or scenes that let the light through. And you’ll find the lid and light opening, with room for the lighting parts and wiring. For a tea light box, that’s a hole in the base instead.
